(5)Five people, including four children, were killed after a fire broke out early Saturday in an apartment building in Redmond, Washington, a police spokesman said.
The fire began on the ground floor of the Sammamish Ridge Apartments about 2:30 a.m. (5:30 a.m. ET), Redmond police spokesman Lt. Tim Gately said. The building was not equipped with a sprinkler system, he said.
In addition to the four children -- who were all under the age of 10 -- a 32-year-old man was killed. A woman was taken to a local hospital where her condition was unknown.
The relationship between the victims was not immediately known, Gately said, and authorities are working to identify next of kin.
All other residents of the building were unharmed.
The cause of the fire is under investigation
